On this page I will show you how to properly reset the Linksys RV082 router back to factory defaults.

A reset is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you are cycling the power to the unit only. When you reset the router you take all the settings and return them to factory defaults.

Warning: A reset like this one is a big step and should not be taken lightly. We strongly recommend making a list of all the possible settings you have changed in the past. These settings include:

  • The router's main username and password.
  • Any port forwarding you have done.
  • IP addresses that have been changed.
  • Parental controls, DNS, etc...

While the router is on take sharp object such as a straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 30 seconds. This starts the reset process which can take several minutes to complete. If you don't hold the reset button down long enough you might end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Warning: DO NOT unplug or turn off the router during the reset process! Doing so could cause permanent damage to the router.

We strongly recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you decide to reset the router.

Login to the Linksys RV082

Upon finishing the reset you will need to login to the router. To accomplish this you will need the default IP address, username, and password. We have found and compiled this information for you in our Login Guide for the Linksys RV082 router.

Tip: Defaults not working? The router might have not been properly reset. Try resetting it again but this time hold down the reset button for a little longer.

Change Your Password

Once you successfully login to the router you should change the password as soon as possible. Default passwords are often short and easy to guess. If you need any help on making up a secure password, visit our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: To prevent losing your password, try writing it down on a note and attach it to the base of the router.
