If you have been trying to login to the Linksys WAG54G-XW router setup pages and been unable to do so it might be time to consider a reset.

When you reset a router it is different than a reboot. A reboot cycles the power to the device. A reset takes all the settings and returns every one of them back to factory defaults. All your personal data is lost in the reset.

Warning: A reset is a big step and should not be taken lightly. Before you reset the Linksys WAG54G-XW router I recommend making a list of all the settings you may of changed in the past. These settings should include:

  • The router's main setup username and password.
  • Any port forwards you have done in the past.
  • Any IP addresses you have changed or DNS servers you changed.

While the router is on take a straightened paperclip or similar object and press down on the reset button/pinhole for about 10 seconds. If you don't hold the reset button down for that long you might end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Caution: DO NOT unplug or turn off the machine while the reset is happening. Doing so could result in permanent damage to the unit.

Remember a reset like this one erases every single setting you have ever changed on the device. It is strongly recommended that you exhaust your other troubleshooting options before you continue.
