On this page I will be explaining how to properly reset the Linksys WAG54GP2 router.

There is some confusion about the difference between a reset and a reboot. In this guide when I use the term reboot I am referring to a cycle in the power to the unit only. When I use the term reset I am referring to a full factory restore of all settings. This means all your personal data is lost.

Warning: It is important that you understand this reset erases ALL your personal data. Do not take this reset lightly. I strongly recommend making a list of all the possible settings you have changed in the past. These settings could include:

  • The router's main username and password used to access the router setup pages.
  • The WiFi settings such as the SSID and the Internet password.
  • Is this a DSL router? If so you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password. These details can be obtained by calling your local provider.
  • All other settings such as port forwarding or changes to an IP address.

While the device is on take a straightened paperclip or similar object and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. When you do this make sure you hold the button down for the full 10 seconds. If you don't the router may only reboot instead of reset like you intended.

Warning: It is important that you DO NOT interrupt the reset process. DO NOT unplug or turn off the router while the Linksys WAG54GP2 is performing the reset. Doing so could cause permanent damage to the device.

Don't forget that this reset is going to erase every single setting you have ever changed in the past. I strongly recommend exhausting your other troubleshooting options first.

Tip: If the defaults aren't working, the router may have been rebooted instead of reset. Try resetting it again but hold down the reset button for a little longer this time.

Change Your Password

Once you login to your router you should change the password from the default as soon as possible. Default passwords are easy to guess, making them bad password. For helpful advice on making a secure password, visit our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: Avoid losing your password by writing it down on some paper and attaching it to the underside of the router.
