Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

In the left sidebar you see a list of heading. Find the one labeled 2.4GHz under Wireless.

The first thing that needs to be changed from the default setting is the SSID. This is like your identification. Create an original name here that you will remember. It doesn't matter what you enter here but it's a good idea to avoid personal information. We have more info on this topic, check out our guide titled How to Change your Wireless Name.

The second thing that you should at least check is the Channel. There are three channels that everyone should use to avoid overlapping with neighbors. Use one of these three channels, 1,6, or 11. If you are interested in more detail, check out our guide titled WiFi Channels.

The third thing is the security setting. This firmware version only allows for WEP. This is an outdated form of security. As a result it is quite weak. We strongly recommend updating your firmware version to allow for WPA2 PSK. Read our guide for more information, WEP vs. WPA.

That's it for this guide, go ahead and click the Apply button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
