  1. Use the SSID box to enter a new, original, name for your local network. This name is used for identification. It doesn't matter what you enter here but it's a good idea to avoid personal information. Learn more in our Wireless Names Guide.
  2. In the drop down list titled Network Type, choose either Infrastructure or Ad-Hoc. Most of you will use Infrastructure.
  3. If you do use Ad-Hoc, use the Channel list to choose from channel 1,6, or 11. Learn why you should only be using these three channels by reading our WiFi Channels Guide.
  4. Next is WEP. We strongly recommend updating your firmware to allow for WPA2 Pre-Shared Key. Do not use WEP it is extremely weak and can be cracked quite easily. Learn more in our WEP vs. WPA guide.
  5. Click the Apply button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
