Have you tried to login to the Linksys WRE54Gv2 router without success? It might be time to consider a reset.

What exactly is a reset? The term reset is often used to depict a reboot. A reset is different than a reboot. In this guide when I use the term reset I am referring to a full restore of all your settings back to how they were when the router left the factory. When I use the term reboot. I am referring to a cycle in the power to the device.

Warning: This reset requires you to completely reconfigure the router. It would be a good idea to make a list of all the settings you have changed in the past. These settings could include:

  • The router's main username and password used to access the router setup pages.
  • The wireless settings like the SSID and Internet password.
  • Is this a DSL router? You may need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password. If you don't know these values you need to call your local provider.
  • Other settings you may forget include port forwards, IP addresses or possibly parental controls.

In the image below I have circled the reset button. This button is less of a button and more of a pinhole. This is to avoid accidental resets.

The first step is to make sure the router is plugged in and on. Then with an object that fits in the pinhole such as a straightened paperclip, press and hold the button down for at least 10 seconds. This starts the reset process. If you don't hold the reset button down for long enough you might end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you planned.

Warning: DO NOT unplug or turn off the router during the reset process. Doing so will likely cause permanent damage to the device.

Remember a reset like this one erases every single setting you have ever changed in the past. I strongly recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you decide to reset the Linksys WRE54Gv2 router.
