On this page I will explain how to properly reset the Linksys WRE54Gv3 router.

If you are unsure what a reset actually is then you are not alone. Router manufacturers use the term reset to mean both a reset and a reboot. In this guide when I use the term reset I mean a full restore of all the settings back to how they were from the factory. When I use the term reboot I am referring to a cycle in the power to the unit, nothing more.

Warning: This reset is a big step and should not be taken lightly. I strongly recommend making a list of all the settings you have changed in the past as they will all need to be reconfigured after the reset is finished. These settings include:

  • The router's main username and password. These are used to access your router's setup pages.
  • The wireless settings such as the SSID and the Internet password.
  • Are you resetting a DSL router? If you are you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password. Call your ISP for these details.
  • What other settings have you changed in the past? Make sure to write them down. Don't forget port forwards, IP addresses and even parental controls.

While the router is on take a straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This starts the reset process. A lot of router's use the reset button to reboot the router as well. If you don't hold the reset button down long enough you will probably simply reboot the router.
