WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

On this new page:

  • The first setting is called the Network Mode. This is asking what wireless devices you plan on using to access your network. Older wireless devices made before 2003 are considered Wireless-B. Newer than that but older than 2009 are Wireless-G. Newer than that is considered Wireless-N. Wireless-G and Wireless-N are both backward compatible, meaning that the newer standards will work with the older ones. If you are unsure of what to pick here, we recommend picking Mixed to be safe.
  • The second thing that needs to be changed is called the Network Name (SSID). This is a name you need to create in order to identify your network. It's not important what you enter here but we suggest avoiding personal information for your security. Learn more in our Wireless Name Guide.
  • Below that is the Radio Band. Our recommendation is to select Auto - 20/40MHz Channel.
  • In the Wide Channel drop-down list, pick the channel of 6.
  • Use the Standard Channel drop-down list to pick either channel 1 or 11. To learn why you should only use these three channels, read our WiFi Channels Guide.
  • If you want to hide your SSID you created, then click the Disabled button next to SSID Broadcast. This is only camouflaging your network not making it completely invisible. A hacker can still find a hidden network with a minimal amount of effort.
  • When you are finished with this page, click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page.

Now, click Wireless Security at the top of the page in the blue bar.

This brings you to the page you see here.

  • First is the Security Mode. This is asking what type of security you want to use. The best option is titled PSK2-Personal. This is also called WPA2-PSK. To learn why this is your best choice, read our WEP vs. WPA guide.
  • Next is the Encryption. We recommend choosing AES.
  • Under that is the Pre-shared Key. This is the password you type into your wireless device so that you can connect to your local network. It is very important that you change this from the default password. Hackers make it their business to know the defaults and will try those first. Create a strong password of at least 14-20 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Learn more in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
  • Finally, click the Save Settings button to apply the changes you have made.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
