WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

You are then directed to the page seen here.

First, be sure that the Wireless Module (2.4GHz) is Enabled.

Second, use the box labeled Network ID(SSID) to enter a new name for your network. Be creative because it really doesn't matter what you enter here. Learn more in our Wireless Names Guide.

The third setting is titled SSID Broadcast. If you leave this Enabled your SSID is visible to surrounding wireless devices. If you choose to Disable this option it essentially hides your SSID from any neighboring wireless devices. If a potential hacker wants to find a hidden network they can do so with the correct tools.

Next is the Channel. Be sure you are using either 1,6, or 11. Learn why in our WiFi Channels Guide.

We suggest setting the Wireless Mode to B/G/N Mixed.

Under that is the Authentication. This is the security and we recommend WPA2-PSK. Learn what the different options are in our WEP vs. WPA guide.

Now skip down to the Encryption. The most secure encryption available right now is AES.

Finally, the last setting is titled Preshare Key. This is the network password. It is a good idea to make this password as strong as possible. We suggest using a minimum of 14-20 characters. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols to create this unique password. Check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for more information.

You did it. Just click the Save button and you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
