The setting that need to be changed are:

  • The Name(SSID) is close to the top of the page and needs to be a name you create. It doesn't matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Learn more in our Wireless Names Guide.
  • The Channel is directly under the SSID and should be on channel number 1,6, or 11. Go ahead and change it if you are not on one of these three channels. Learn more in our WiFi Channels Guide.
  • The Security Option should be set to WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 Pre-Shared Key) for the best security. Learn why in our WEP vs. WPA Guide.
  • The Encryption should be set to AES.
  • The Passphrase is the last setting to be changed. This is the password and it is strongly recommended that you make this password strong. A minimum of 14-20 characters is a good idea. We have more ideas for you in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
  • Click the Apply button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

That's it, you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
