On this new page there are several settings that need your attention:

  • The first is called Name(SSID). Create a new name here for your network. Be creative here but avoid personal information for your security. Learn more about the SSID in our Wireless Names Guide.
  • The second setting is titled Channel. Of the channels available for use, there are three that tend to work better than the others. We ask that you use one of these three channels, 1,6, or 11. Learn why in our WiFi Channels Guide.
  • The third setting that needs to be addressed is the Security Options. For the best security click the radio button labeled WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 Pre-Shared Key). Click this link if you are interested in learning why this is the best option for your network.
  • The last setting that you need to change is called the Security Encryption (WPA2-PSK) Pre-Shared Key. This is your network password and should be changed from the default. We recommend using at least 14 characters here with symbols, numbers, and letters. Learn more in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
  • To save your changes, click the Apply button at the bottom of the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
