Netgear Router Passwords

The default login for almost every Netgear router is username admin and password password, both in lowercase. Newer routers set up with the Nighthawk or Orbi app ask you to create your own admin password instead.

The Most Common Netgear Logins

• Username admin, password password: most Netgear routers, Orbi and cable gateways.
• Username admin, password 1234: some older DSL modem routers.
• The admin password printed on the label: some ISP-supplied gateways and mobile hotspots.
• Your own password: routers set up with the app.

Every Known Netgear Default Password

The admin password opens the router's settings. The WiFi password (the network key) is different. On most newer Netgear routers it's printed on the label under the router.

Connect to the router, go to http://www.routerlogin.net, and enter the username and password. Our Netgear login guide shows each step.

If the Default Password Doesn't Work

1. Check that you're typing password in lowercase, with Caps Lock off.
2. Try any password you might have chosen during setup.
3. Use password recovery: click Cancel at the sign-in box. This only works if recovery was turned on before.
4. Reset the router to factory defaults. You'll lose all your settings.

Change the Admin Password

In NETGEAR genie or Orbi, go to ADVANCED > Administration > Set Password. On classic models, go to Maintenance > Set Password. Enter the old password, then the new one twice, and click Apply. Tick Enable Password Recovery while you're there, so you can recover the password later.

Pick a long, unique password. See choosing a strong password.
