Setup WiFi on the Netgear VMDG280

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Click the option in the left sidebar labeled Wireless Settings under the heading of Setup.

This takes you to a page similar to the one you see above.

The first setting is titled Name(SSID). This is a name you need to create in order to identify your local network. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we advise you to stay away from personal information. Check out this Wireless Names Guide for more information.

Now take a look at the Channel you are using. Everybody should use either channel 1,6, or 11. Find out why by clicking this link.

The last thing you need to change is the Passphrase. This is the password you use to access your network. We recommend at least 14 characters with one symbol, number, and capital letter. Find out more tips in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
