Setup WiFi on the Netgear WG602v2

The Netgear WG602v2 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Netgear WG602v2

To get started configuring the Netgear WG602v2 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WG602v2

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

Start on the information page of the Netgear WG602v2 router. To configure the WiFi settings to be more secure, click the option in the left sidebar labeled Wireless Settings, under Setup.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WG602v2

On this new page, you first need to change the Wireless Network Name (SSID). This is the network ID and should be something of your creation. It would be a good idea to avoid personal information. Check out our Wireless Names Guide for more info on the topic.

The other setting on this page that should be looked at is titled Channel/Frequency. Make sure you are on channel 1,6, or 11. To learn why these three channels are so important, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

That's it, just click the Apply button.

Now, look to the left sidebar one more time and click the option under Setup labeled Security Settings.

On this new page, use the drop down list titled Security Type to choose the appropriate security option. The best option is WPA2-PSK. This option is not available for this version of your router. We highly recommend updating your firmware version to allow for this option. Check out our WEP vs. WPA Guide for more information.

You now need to enter a Passphrase. This is the network password and we recommend using 14-20 characters and at least one symbol, number, and capital letter. Learn more in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it, just click the Apply button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
