Setup WiFi on the Netgear WGPS606

The Netgear WGPS606 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Netgear WGPS606

To get started configuring the Netgear WGPS606 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WGPS606

This guide begins on the Status page of the Netgear WGPS606 router. To configure the wireless settings, click the Wireless Settings option under the Setup heading.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WGPS606

You are then taken to the page you see here. First, click the radio button labeled Use this SSID. Then to the right of that, enter a new name for your network. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Check out our guide titled How to Change your Wireless Name.

Now choose an appropriate Wireless Security option for your network. We recommend WPA2-PSK which this version of your router does not have. Please update your firmware to allow for this more secure option. Read our WEP vs. WPA Guide for more on this topic.

Once you have done this, change your Passphrase to one of your choosing. We recommend using a minimum of 14-20 characters. Check out our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

That's all there is to do, just don't forget to save your changes by clicking the Apply button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
