WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Orcon Genius

First, you want to make sure the Enable radio button next to Enable or disable Wireless function is chosen.

Under Wireless network place a check in the box next to Enable primary SSID. Then farther to the right is a space available to enter a new name. Go ahead and create a new name for your network here. While it doesn't really matter what you enter here it is prudent to avoid personal information. Check out our Wireless Names Guide for more information.

Next, use the Channel drop-down menu to choose from channels 1,6, or 11. Find out why in our WiFi Channels Guide.

Now find the Security Options. Make sure that Primary SSID is chosen in the drop-down list.

Below that are four different security options. The most secure is not available. We recommend updating your firmware to allow for WPA2-PSK only. Mixing WPA2 with WPA creates a less secure network. Take a look at our WEP vs. WPA Guide for more information.

Set the Pre-shared key type to the option of Passphrase (8~63 characters).

Finally you need to change the Pre-shared Key. This is the internet password. It is highly recommended that you use at least 14-20 characters with a minimum of one symbol, capital letter, and number in your new password. Learn more about this in our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Go back to the top of the page and click the grey button labeled Save settings before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
