Setup WiFi on the Prolink WNR1006

The Prolink WNR1006 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Login To The Prolink WNR1006

To get started configuring the Prolink WNR1006 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Prolink WNR1006

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

This wireless setup guide begins on the Status page of the Prolink WNR1006 router. Begin by clicking the file called Wireless Settings in the left sidebar. Then under that choose Basic.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Prolink WNR1006

You are now on the Basic Wireless Settings page. Locate the Network Name (SSID). This is your network ID. It doesn't matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Take a look at our Wireless Names Guide for more on the topic.

To change the Frequency/Channel, unselect the AutoSelect option in the upper drop-down list.

Then using the lower drop-down list, pick the channel you want to use. Make sure you are using channels 1,6, or 11. Learn more about channels in our WiFi Channels Guide.

Now click the Apply button.

Go back to the left sidebar and click the option of Security under Wireless Settings.

Use the SSID choice to pick the SSID you just created on the previous page.

In the Security Mode you need to choose WPA2-PSK. If this selection is unavailable, we recommend updating your firmware to allow for it. Learn why in our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

You will then need to enter a passphrase or pre-shared key. This is the password for your internet. Be creative and use as many characters as possible. Don't forget about symbols, numbers, and capital letters. Check out our Choosing a Strong Password guide for more ideas.

That's it, just click the Apply button when you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
