A factory reset returns a ZyXEL router to its default settings, including the default admin password. Use it when you're locked out or the router is misconfigured.
Before You Reset
A reset erases everything: your WiFi settings, port forwards and your Internet login. Write down your PPPoE username and password and any VLAN settings, or get them from your ISP. Without them you may not get back online. A restart is different. It keeps every setting.
Method 1: The Reset Button
The RESET pinhole is on the back of the router.
- With the router on, press and hold RESET for about 10 seconds, until the Power light starts to blink.
- Let go. The router restarts with its default settings after a minute or two.
On many ZyXEL routers, a 1 to 4 second press only restarts the router. Hold the button longer to reset it.
Method 2: Reset From the Web Interface
- Newer ZyXEL gateways: Maintenance > Backup/Restore, then Reset under Back to Factory Default Settings.
- Older ZyXEL gateways: Maintenance > Tools > Configuration, then Reset.
- NBG routers (Expert Mode): Maintenance > Backup/Restore (or Configuration), then Reset.
After the Reset
- Connect with the default WiFi details on the label, or with a cable.
- Log in at http://192.168.1.1. See the ZyXEL login guide and the ZyXEL passwords list.
- Re-enter your Internet settings, change the admin password and set up WiFi.
