The 2wire 2701HG-D router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.
Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

Change the WiFi Settings on the 2wire 2701HG-D
Starting at the top of the page:
- Turn Wireless ON. Make sure the dot titled On is selected.
- Change the SSID setting to any name or code you want. In the SSID box, enter the network name you would like to use to identify your network from the others around you. Don't use any personal information such as a name or phone number. For more information on WiFi names check out our guide on wireless names.
- Secure your wireless network by clicking on the button next to Auto WPA or WPA2. Mark the dot labeled Auto WPA or WPA2 .
- Select a Key. This is the password you and your friends will use to access your network. Mark the dot labeled Create a Auto WPA or WPA2 Key. Then, place your cursor in the box available. This should not contain any personal information, or words from any dictionary. You should make it as long and random as possible. Include numbers, symbols, and capital letters in your password. For more information on how to make a strong memorable password, check out our guide on how to choose a strong password.
- Click the Apply button when you are finished on this page.
Look in the left sidebar and click the option titled WPA or WPA2.
You should now be on a page like the one you see above.
- Select WPA or WPA2. Use the drop down menu to choose the option of WPA2 Only. WPA2 is the strongest security available on the market today. For more information on this, take a look at our WEP vs. WPA guide.
- Enter the PSK for your network below. Under this is a box labeled Pre-Shared Key (PSK) for Home Network. Make sure to enter the same Key you entered on the last page in step 4.
- Click the Apply button before leaving this page.
Next is the SSID Broadcast. Tick the choice on the left side of the page labeled SSID Broadcast.
- Set SSID mode. Choose either Enable or Disable. If you choose Enable, it is easier to access and is visible to the general public. If you choose Disable, it is harder to access for family and friends and is invisible to the general public. This does not mean you are invisible to hackers. They have scanning tools to locate all networks whether they are visible or not.
- Don't forget to click the Apply button if you have made any changes.
The last page we will visit is the Channel page. Tick the link in the left sidebar titled Channel.
You should now be on a page like the one above.
- Select Channel. You can either choose Auto which means the router will choose for you or you can choose a channel manually. If you choose manually we strongly recommend using either channel 1,6, or 11. For more information on why you should only use these three channels, check out our WiFi channels guide.
- Select Wireless Power Level. We suggest leaving this setting at it's default unless you are noticing router performance issues. If you need more or less power to your router's signal, adjust this accordingly.
- Finally, click the Apply button before exiting.
You did it, congratulations!
Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings
After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
