You begin on the Welcome page of the 3Com 3CRWER300-73 router. Click the link on the left in the dark blue sidebar labeled Wireless Settings. Then, at the top of the page pick the option of Configuration.

  1. Channel - In the United States there are only three channels that if everyone used them, would not overlap. Use either channel 1,6 or 11. If you want to know more about why you should only use these three channels check out our guide on WiFi channels.
  2. SSID - This is the name that identifies your wireless network from those around you. You shouldn't use any personal information in this name. If you need help creating an original SSID, check out our wireless name guide.
  3. SSID Broadcast - If you want to broadcast your network name it will be visible to all the surrounding networks. If you choose to not broadcast your network name it is invisible to the general public but not to a hacker with scanning tools.
  4. Everything else on this page should be left as it is.
  5. Click the Apply button when you are finished on this page.

Next, click the tab at the top of the page labeled Encryption.

On this new page:

  1. WPA - This should be set to WPA-PSK (no server). The (no server) refers to an outside server called a RADIUS server. It is very unlikely that you have one of these.
  2. WPA Mode should be set to WPA2. This is the strongest security available for your network. If you need more information on which mode you should choose, check out our guide on WEP vs. WPA.
  3. Encryption technique - From this drop down menu choose AES. This is the strongest encryption available. It is considered uncrackable with today's technology.
  4. Pre-shared key type - choose the radio button of Passphrase(8~63 characters).
  5. Pre-Shared Key (PSK) - This is the password you enter to be able to access your network. This password is extremely important to your network security. Be sure to use symbols, numbers, and capital letters. Don't use any personal information, or any words you can find in a dictionary.   6. Click the Apply button when you are finished.

That's it, you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
