You should now be on a page that looks quite similar to the one you see above.

  • The first thing you should change is the SSID. This is referring to the wireless name. This is the name you give your network to identify it from those around you. You don't want to advertise which one is yours, so don't use any personal information in this name. If you want more information, check out our guide on wireless names.
  • Next is the Channel Number. You can either choose 1,6, or 11. Everyone in the United States should use one of these three channels. For more information on why you should only use these three channels, check out our WiFi channels guide.
  • That's it on this page, go ahead and click Apply Changes.

Next, click the file in the left sidebar labeled Security.

You should now be on the Wireless Security Setup page.

  • First is the SSID TYPE. Click the Root option. If you are using this router as a booster for another router then you would choose a different option.
  • Below that is the Encryption. By default this router has no encryption. It is extremely ill-advised to leave this at the default. Change this immediately to WPA2(AES). This is the strongest form of encryption available today. AES is considered uncrackable with the technology available now. For more information on this subject check out the WEP vs. WPA guide.
  • The WPA Authentication Mode should be set to Personal (Pre-Shared Key).
  • Below that is the Pre-Shared Key Format. This should be set to Passphrase.
  • Next is the Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. This is a very important step. Nothing in this password should be able to be guessed. It needs to be completely random, and not contain any word from any dictionary. If you want to use words, be sure and misspell them. It shouldn't contain any personal information. Do add in symbols, numbers, and capital letters to your password. If you need help creating an original but memorable password check out our guide titled how to choose a strong password.
  • Lastly, click the Apply Changes button at the bottom of the page.

You did it!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
