This is the wifi guide for the A-Link RR84AP. We also have the following guides for the same router:

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

You should now be on the Wireless Basic Setting page.

  • The SSID should be changed. Enter a new SSID or wireless name in the box labeled SSID. This name should not contain any personal information. For more information on creating a wireless name check out our guide on the subject by clicking the wireless name link.
  • The next thing that you should change is the Channel. In the United States there are 11 channels to choose from but only three of them should be used so there is no overlapping. Routers respond better if you are on the same channel than if you are only partly on the same channel. For this reason, only use channel 1,6, or 11. For more information on this subject check out our guide on WiFi channels.
  • The last thing you may want to change on this page is the Broadcast SSID. If you broadcast it, it is visible to all the surrounding networks and identified by your wireless name. If you choose to not broadcast your SSID, it becomes invisible to the general public. But a hacker has the tools to scan for invisible networks. This is a personal preference not necessarily a security measure.
  • Click the Save button in the upper right corner of the page when you are finished on this page.

You need to now click the option at the top of the page labeled Security.

On this page do the following:

  1. In the Encryption drop down menu choose the option of WPA2 (AES). WPA2 is the strongest authentication method and AES is the best encryption available today. For more information on why WPA2 (AES) is the best choice, take a look at our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.
  2. Next is the Authentication Type. By default this is at Auto this should be fine, we will tell the router in just a minute to use a password.
  3. Skip down to the WPA Authentication Mode. By choosing Personal (Pre-Shared Key) you have just told the router to use a password to connect to your network, which you should definitely want.
  4. In the next box titled Pre-Shared Key Format choose Passphrase.
  5. Now to enter the password you have chosen. In the box labeled Pre-Shared Key, enter a long random password in this box. The password should not contain any personal information, or any word from a dictionary. If you have to use words, be sure that they are misspelled. Do use symbols, numbers, and capital letters. If you need more help coming up with a good password, check out our guide on how to choose a strong password.
  6. Don't forget to Save any changes you have made to this page.

That's it, you did it!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
