  • Wireless Network Mode - Use this drop down menu to choose Mixed.
  • Wireless Network Name (SSID) - This is the network name that identifies you from the other network around. Don't use any personal information in this name. For more information on what your SSID or network name is, check out our guide on Wireless name.
  • Wireless Channel - Just like a radio, you can change your wireless network channel. In the United States there are 11 different channels you can choose from. Of these 11 channels there are three that if everyone used them they would not overlap. Use either channel 1,6, or 11. For more information on this subject, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.
  • Leave the rest at their defaults.
  • When you are finished, click the blue Apply Settings button.

Now, click the link at the top of the page labeled Wireless Security.

  • Security Mode - This is asking you what type of security you want to use when transmitting your data. We recommend using WPA2 Personal. WPA2 is the most secure choice available. For more information on this subject, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.
  • WPA Algorithms - The two choices are TKIP and AES. TKIP has been cracked, AES has not yet been cracked. We recommend choosing the option of AES.
  • WPA Shared Key - This is the password. The password is extremely important to the security of your network. Your password should not contain any personal information. It should not contain any words found in any dictionary. If you need to use words, misspell them. Do use symbols, numbers, and capital letters in the middle of your password. For help in creating a strong and memorable password, check out our guide on the subject labeled How to choose a strong password.
  • Key Renewal Interval (in seconds) - Leave this at it's default value.
  • When you are finished, be sure to click the Apply Settings button in blue at the bottom of the page.

That's it, congratulations!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
