Next is the Channel Number. In the United States there are only 11 channels you can use. Of these 11 channels, there are only three that everyone should use. Pick from channel 1,6, and 11. For reasons why you should use these three channels only, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

Next to WPA2 Cipher Suite, choose AES.

Use the drop down menu next to Pre-Shared Key Format to choose Passphrase.

Now, use the box next to Pre-Shared Key to enter the password you will use to access your network. This is an important step to the security of your network. Make your password long, at least 20 characters, and random. Don't use personal information. Don't use any word you could find in a dictionary. Do use some symbols, numbers, and capital letters in your password. For help in creating a strong password check out our guide called How to choose a strong password.

That's it, just click Apply and you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
