This guide will cover how to reset the Arris TG862 router to factory defaults. It requires mentioning that resetting a device is not the same as rebooting a device. Rebooting is turning the device off and back on again to cycle the power. Resetting a device is typically referring to reverting all configurations or settings back to original factory defaults.
Warning: Resetting the router should only be done if you are out of other options. Consider the following before continuing.
- The router username and password are reset to factory defaults.
- Your WiFi settings such as SSID and Internet password are reset as well.
- If you happen to use a DSL connection you will need to re-enter the username and password of your ISP, or Internet Service Provider.
- All configurations you have done to personalize this router are erased. This could include anything from IP address changes to port forwards you created for your favorite online game.

Use a VPN Instead
Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
The first step in any reset is to make sure the device remains on during the entire process. If the router gets turned off or unplugged during this process you could end up with a permanently damaged router.
Now you need to locate the very tiny reset button located on the back of the router. We have found it for you and circled it in red in the image below.
Now use a sharp object such as an unwound paperclip or tip of a pencil to press and hold the tiny reset button for about 10 seconds. If you don't hold the reset button down for the entire 10 seconds you may only reboot the router instead of the desired reset.
Remember that this will erase everything you have done to your router. Try other troubleshooting methods first.
Login to the Arris TG862
Now that you have finished resetting the Arris TG862 router you should login to the Graphical User Interface using the default username and password from the factory. This can be found inside the user guide. We have found them for you and included them in the Arris TG862 Login Guide.
Change Your Password
Next it's a good idea to change the router's default password to something new. This can be just about anything you like. This can be difficult so we have included a link with helpful hints on how to create a strong password.
Tip: After creating a password you should write it down on a post-it note and stick it to the bottom of the router for next time you need to login.
Setup WiFi on the Arris TG862
The last setting we urge you to change is the WiFi security. The security is reset as well as the password you use to secure your network. Some router manufacturers like to leave the security open as the default. We strongly recommend changing this to WPA2-PSK. If you need instructions on how to do this check out this How to Setup WiFi on the Arris TG862 guide.
