WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Asus DSL-AC52U

This is the wifi setup page from your Asus DSL-AC52U router.

You should see the page above when the General tab is selected.

There are five settings on this page that I will cover. The first is the SSID. This is the name you give your network so it easier to find when you want to connect to it. Enter a new name in this box. Make it unique, something you will remember. I recommend avoiding personal and router specific information. Learn more about this topic in our How to Change your Wireless Name guide.

If you want to change your channel you can do that next. Open up the drop down menu that reads Control Channel. Choose the new channel you want to use from this list. I recommend using channels 1,6 or 11. Find out why in this WiFi Channels guide.

A little farther down the page is the Authentication Method. My recommendation is the use of WPA2-Personal. This is the strongest authentication available. Learn what this is and your other possible options in our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Next, set the WPA Encryption to AES. This option is newer than TKIP.

Finally you need to enter a new WPA Pre-Shared Key. This is a very important step. This is the network password. You can have the strongest authentication and encryption known to man but if you have a weak password your entire network is at risk of being cracked. Make this new password at least 14 characters in length. Use numbers, letters, and if possible use symbols as well. The more random your password looks the stronger it is. Learn more about strengthening your passwords by reading my Choosing a Strong Password guide.

To save your changes click the black Apply button near the bottom of the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
