This guide covers how to reset the Asus RT-AC56R router to factory defaults. A reset is not the same thing as a reboot. Rebooting the router is cycling the power by turning the device off and back on again. Resetting the router is erasing all your previous configurations and reverting the settings to factory defaults.
Warning: Resetting the router can cause problems if you are unaware of what has changed. Please take careful consideration of the following before continuing.
- The router's username and password are returned to defaults.
- The WiFi SSID, password, and security mode are returned to default.
- If you use DSL you will need to re-enter the the ISP username and password. To know what these are you will need to contact your ISP.
- All configurations are erased. These include IP address changes, port forwards, or even parental controls.

Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
First you need to be sure the Asus RT-AC56R router is turned on. This is important because if you turn it off unplug it at any point during the reset it could permanently damage the device.
Now you need to locate the tiny recessed reset button on the back panel of the router. We have it circled for you in the image below.
Using a sharpened pencil or unwound paperclip press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds.
Remember this will erase all of the configurations you have done to your router to personalize it. Try other troubleshooting methods first.
Login to the Asus RT-AC56R
Once you have finished resetting the Asus RT-AC56R router you need to login to it using the default username and password. We have these for you and have included them in the Asus RT-AC56R Login Guide.
Change Your Password
Next you need to change that default password to something you have created. It really doesn't matter what you pick here. If you have trouble coming up with strong passwords check out this Choosing a Strong Password guide.
Tip: Write this new password down on a slip of paper and stick it to the bottom of your router for future reference.
Setup WiFi on the Asus RT-AC56R
The last setting we will talk about here is the WiFi settings. These settings have been reset as well. Some router manufacturers like to leave the security open as the default. This means there is no security. Change your security to WPA2-PSK if at all possible. We have a guide covering this if you want to use it, check out the How to Setup WiFi on the Asus RT-AC56R guide.
Don't forget to sign up for NordVPN's promo deal before it's gone.
