This guide covers how to reset the Asus RT-AC87R router. The term reset may be confused for the term reboot. Rebooting a router is simply recycling the power by turning it off and turning it back on again. A reset is more in depth because it erases all configurations you have ever made to this router and reverts the entire thing back to factory defaults.
Warning: Resetting a router should not be taken lightly. A reset is serious and if you don't know what changes it could be problematic. Please consider the following before continuing.
- The router username and password are returned to default.
- The WiFi information such as SSID, password, and security mode are reverted to default.
- If you use DSL to connect you will need to re-enter the ISP username and password to access the Internet again. If you don't know this you will need to call your ISP for information.
- All changes you have made such as port forwards, IP address changes, or firewall settings are erased.

Reset the Asus RT-AC87R
Use a VPN Instead

The first thing to do in a reset is to make sure your router remains on. This is important because if it gets turned off or unplugged it could cause permanent damage to the router.
The next step is to locate the reset button. This is normally on the back panel. We have circled it's location in the image below.
Using something sharp such as an unwound paperclip press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds.
Please don't forget that this erases everything you have done to your router. Try other troubleshooting methods first.
Login to the Asus RT-AC87R
You now need to login. Remember the router is reset now so you need to use the default username and password. We have found these for you and included them in our Login Guide for the Asus RT-AC87R.
Change Your Password
After logging into the Asus RT-AC87R router you should change that password to something else. It's never a good idea to leave a password as the default. Helpful tips and ideas can be found in this guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.
Tip: If you need to write this password down and attach it to the bottom of the router go ahead and do so.
