In this guide we will show you how to reset the Asus WL500g-Deluxe router back to factory defaults. There is some confusion between the terms reset and reboot. Rebooting a router is simply turning it off and back on again. Resetting a router is taking all the settings and returning them to how they were from the factory.
Warning: Be careful resetting this router can cause problems if you don't know what settings are changed. We recommend creating a list of settings you know will change. In this list include the following:
- If you use DSL you will need to re-enter the ISP username and password. To obtain this info. call your ISP.
- The router's main username and password are reverted to factory settings.
- The WiFi settings such as SSID, password, and security method are all returned to factory settings.
- Any other settings such as port forwards or DNS server changes are erased. All of these need to be reconfigured.

Use a VPN Instead
Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.

The first thing to do in a reset is to find the reset button. Normally it is a tiny recessed button on the back panel. We have circled it's location in the image below.
Now take the end of an unwound paperclip or pin to press and hold the button for about 10 seconds. If you hold it down for a shorter amount of time it will only reboot the router. It is also important to note that the Asus WL500g-Deluxe router needs to be on in order for this reset to work. Do not unplug or turn off the router during this process. Doing so could cause router damage.
Remember this erases every setting you have ever changed in this router's interface. It's a good idea to try other troubleshooting methods first.
Login to the Asus WL500g Deluxe
After you have finished resetting the Asus WL500g-Deluxe router you need to login to it's interface. To do this you will need to know the factory default IP address, username, and password. We have found these for you and included them in our Asus WL500g-Deluxe Login Guide.
Change Your Password
Now it's a good idea to change the default password. It's never a good idea to leave a password as the default. Defaults are very easy to crack because they're easy to find. Change this password to something new. If you need help check out our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.
Tip: If your router is in a secure location it's okay to write this password down and attach it to the bottom of your router so you don't lose it.
