WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

This is the wifi setup page from your Aztech DSL600EW router.

You should now be on the page you see here. First the box titled Enable AP should be clicked.

Below that, in the box labeled Primary SSID enter the name you want to use to identify your network. This name should be original but avoid using personal information. For a more detailed guide on it, click the Wireless names link.

Next is the Hidden SSID. If you choose to click this box, your network name will be invisible to surrounding wireless devices. This does not mean a hacker won't be able to find your network. A hacker has all the tools necessary to find a hidden network name. Hiding your SSID is like wearing camouflage, you are less of a target but you're not really invisible.

Under that is Channel B/G. This only needs to be changed if you are not on channel 1,6, or channel 11. In the United States there are 11 channels to choose from. Of these 11 channels there is only room in the spectrum for three channels that do not overlap each other, channels 1,6, and 11. For more information on why you should only be using these three channels, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

Nothing else should be changed on this page, simply click the blue Apply button in the lower right corner and then click Security in the left sidebar.

This takes you to the page you see above. The first thing you need to do is Select an SSID and its security profile. So, use the drop down box to the right and select the wireless name you created on the previous page. Then, under that choose the type of security you want to use for your network. There are several different choices available. WEP vs. WPA is a great guide describing the differences in all the security options here. WPA2 is the best option. If your router does not offer this, we recommend updating your firmware to allow for it. The next best option is WPA.

Next, click the box that reads Enable WPA Wireless Security.

Below that is the Authentication Type. There a two choices here. TKIP and AES. We recommend using AES it is much more secure than TKIP.

Under that is the WPA Pre-Shared Key. This is the password that you use to access your network. Create a strong password here. Avoid using any personal information here. You need to also avoid using any word that can be found in a dictionary. We do suggest entering in some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. For more information on this subject click the following guide, How to choose a strong password.

The only thing left to do is click the Apply button in the lower right corner of the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
