WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Bandluxe R100

wifi network

  • Network Mode - This is asking what type of devices you are running on your network. The default is Mixed which means it will run devices b/g/n. If you have devices from 1999, you need b. If you have devices newer than 2003, you need g. After 2009, you need n. We recommend using the Mixed setting, because most of us have a range of device ages.
  • Network Name (SSID) - This is the name you give your network so you can distinguish it from the other networks around you. Wireless names is our guide on the topic. For the wireless name you are about to create, make it unique but avoid personal information.
  • Standard Channel - Use the drop down menu to choose channel 1,6, or 11. In the U.S. there are 11 different channels you can use. Of these there is only enough room in the spectrum for three channels that don't overlap. Overlapping channels cause interference. Completely sharing a channel does not. Use channel 1,6, or 11. Check out our guide titled WiFi channels for more a more detailed explanation.
  • SSID Broadcast - This is a personal preference for you. If you choose Enabled then your network is visible to surrounding wireless devices. If you decide to choose Disabled you are hidden from the wireless devices when they scan for a network. This does not mean you are protected from hackers. They have the proper tools to scan for hidden networks. Disabling your broadcast is like camouflage, you are not as visible a target but by no means are you actually invisible.
  • The only thing left to do is click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page.

Now click the choice near the top of the page labeled WiFi Security.

  • Security Mode - From this drop down list choose WPA2-Personal. WPA2 is the strongest form of security available for home networks. Check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA for more information on the differences in the security choices.
  • Encryption - Now that you have chosen the type of security you want to use, you need to choose the encryption method to use when transmitting your personal data on the airwaves. The best choice is WPA2-AES. If this is unavailable choose simply AES.
  • Passphrase - This is the password you use to access your network. This is also used to encrypt your data so this should be a strong password of at least 20 characters. Don't use any personal information in your password. You should also avoid using any words that can be found in a dictionary. We do recommend using numbers, symbols, and capital letters somewhere in the middle of the password. For help in creating a strong yet memorable password, check out our Choosing a strong password guide.
  • Key Renewal - This tells the router how often to create a new encryption key from your password. Choose a number between 60-99999. If a default value is entered, go ahead and leave it. If not, 3600 is a good choice.
  • That's all there is to do, don't forget to click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page.

That's it, you did it!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
