WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D8232-4 router.

The first thing you need to change on this page is the Wireless Channel. You should be on either channel 1,6, or 11. In the spectrum of channels there is only room for up to three channels that don't overlap each other. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. Completely sharing a channel causes much less due to channel sharing software within the router. For more information on why you should only be using these three channels, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

The other setting on this page that should not be left at the default setting is the SSID. This is the name you give your wireless network so you can identify it from the others around you. Take a look at our guide titled Wireless names for more information. When you create this name, be sure you don't use any personal data in the name.

After clicking Apply Changes, click the Security choice on the left side of the page.

router security
This is the security page from your Belkin F5D8232-4 router.

On this page use the drop down list to the right of Security Mode to choose WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK). Do not use WEP, this can be cracked in minutes. Check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA for more information.

The next setting should be the Encryption Technique. There are two choices here, either TKIP or AES. TKIP is much older and has some rather large flaws. We recommend using the newer encryption of AES. As of today, AES is considered uncrackable.

The last setting is the Passphrase. It may also be called the Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. Don't use any personal information in this password. Avoid using real words also. We do recommend using symbols, numbers, and capital letters. The password needs to be strong, at least 20 characters. For more information on this, check out our guide titled Choosing a strong password.

That's all that needs to be changed, click the Apply Changes button when you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
