On this page we show you how to reset the Cisco DPC3848 router to it's original factory defaults. This is not the same thing as a reboot. A reboot is a power cycle to the router where a reset is going to take all the settings and return them all to factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting this router can cause even more problems for you if you aren't expecting the settings to change. We recommend making a list of all the settings you know about that will reset. Please consider the following:

  • The router's main username and password are reverted to factory defaults.
  • The Internet name and password are also reverted to factory defaults.
  • If you use a DSL router you need to re-enter the ISP username and password to continue using the Internet. We recommend calling your Internet Service Provider
  • Have you made any other changes to your router's interface? If you have forwarded any ports or assigned any IP addresses these need to be re-entered.

Reset the Cisco DPC3848

Once you have decided to reset the Cisco DPC3848 router you need to know where the reset button is located. In this particular case it is located on the back panel of the device. Take a look at the image below.

Since this button is quite small you need to take an unwound paperclip or pin to press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds. This begins the reset process which could take a minute or more. If you don't hold the reset button down for the entire time you may only reboot the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Please remember that this erases all the settings you have ever changed on this device. If you want to avoid re-configuring the router you should definitely try other troubleshooting methods first.

Login to the Cisco DPC3848

After the reset process is complete you need to login to the Cisco DPC3848 router using the right default username and password. We have all this information for you already and you can find it in our Cisco DPC3848 Login Guide.

Change Your Password

It's always a good idea to change the default password for your router. These default passwords are meant to be easy to guess making them very bad passwords. We recommend changing it to something you create. IF you need help coming up with a new password take a look at our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: It's important that you not lose this password. If you keep this router in a secure place (like your home) it's okay to write down the password on a piece of paper and attach it to the bottom of the device so you don't lose it and have to reset the router again.

Setup WiFi on the Cisco DPC3848

You should also check on your wireless settings. These include the SSID, the Internet Password, and the encryption method. We suggest using the encryption method of WPA2 along with a strong password. For further information on this topic check out our How to Setup WiFi on the Cisco DPC3848 guide.
