Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

You should now be on a page very similar to the one you see here. First, use the drop down list next to Wireless Network Mode to choose the appropriate option. This is asking what type of wireless devices you are using. B devices were made after 1999, G devices were made after 2003, N devices were made after 2009. Most people have a range of wireless devices. Our advice is to choose the option of B/G/N-Mixed.

Next is the Wireless Channel. Everyone who has neighbors should be using channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels are the most you can get out of the wireless spectrum without overlapping. Overlap causes a lot of interference. For more on this topic, click the WiFi Channels link.

Then in the box labeled SSIS1 enter the name you want to give to your network so that you can identify it later on. We recommend not using any personal information here. Click the Wireless names guide for more information.

Click the Save button. Then, tick Security Settings in the left sidebar.

On this new page, use the Select SSID drop down list to choose the wireless name you just created on the last page.

In the Security Mode drop down list, choose the option of WPA2-Personal. To learn why this is the best option available to home networks, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

A box should now appear that says Shared Key or possibly Shared Secret. This is the password you use to access your network. A strong password is at least 20 characters long. It contains at least one capital letter, symbol, and number. It does not contain any personal information. To learn how to create a strong password that is memorable, click the link titled Choosing a strong password.

Finally click the link at the bottom of the page labeled Save.

That's it, you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
