On this new page, find the box called SSID. This is the name you give your local network so that you can identify it when needed. Go ahead and create a unique name, but avoid personal information. Refer to our Wireless Names Guide for more information.

Next, use the Channel drop down list to choose the channel of 1,6, or 11. These are the only channels most of us should be using, to learn why, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Now find Authentication. There are several options here. We recommend the last one titled WPA2-PSK. This is considered the most secure option available today. Read about it in our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

The next thing to do is choose a proper Passphrase. This is the password you are to use to gain access to your network. this is also used in the encryption method so create a strong password of at least 20 characters. This may seem difficult but read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide before you give up and enter a short, easy to crack password.

Re-type your strong password in the box labeled Confirmed Passphrase.

Tick the green Apply button and you are done.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
