With this page I will be showing you how to reset the Dlink DAP-1555 router back to the original factory defaults. It's important that you know this is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you cycle the power to the device. If you want to do this manually you unplug the power source for about 30 seconds before plugging it back in. This does solve some minor problems you may be experiencing with your router. Sometimes you just need to reset a router however. This takes all the settings and erases them and reverts every one of them back to factory defaults.
Warning: This factory reset should not be taken lightly. A reset can cause problems if you are not completely aware of what settings are changed. Making a list of settings that you have changed in the past is extremely helpful. Consider the following:
- The router's main username and password are reverted to factory defaults.
- The Internet information such as password and name are erased.
- If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the ISP username and password so you don't lose Internet. You'll need to call your Internet Service Provider for more details.
- If you have ever forwarded a port or changed an IP address these will be erased. You must re-enter them after the reset is complete.

Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
Before you begin a reset you should find the reset button. This tiny little button is recessed and usually found on the back panel. Take a look at the picture below. I have circled the reset location for you.
Now take the tip of an unfolded paperclip or pin and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This initiates the reset process which can take upwards of a minute. If you don't hold this button down for long enough you end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.
Remember this reset is going to erase every single setting you have ever changed on your device. To avoid that you really should try other troubleshooting methods first.
Login to the Dlink DAP-1555
Now you'll need to log into the Dlink DAP-1555 router. Log in using the default username and password. We have these listed for you in our Login Guide.
Tip: If the defaults aren't working for you it could be because you didn't hold the reset button down for long enough.
Change Your Password
After logging in we recommend changing the default password. Your new password can be anything you like, however keep in mind that a strong password can be difficult to come up with. Be sure to take a look at our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for more help.
