Setup WiFi on the Dlink DCS-1000W

The Dlink DCS-1000W router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Dlink DCS-1000W

To get started configuring the Dlink DCS-1000W WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Dlink DCS-1000W

To setup the WiFi on the Dlink DCS-1000W, you begin on the Information page. From there, click the choice at the top of the page labeled Advanced. Then, on the left pick System.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Dlink DCS-1000W

You should now be on a page similar to the one you see here. Find the box titled Network Name. In the screenshot above, it is over half way down the page. In this box, you need to enter a name you want your network to be called. This is used to identify your network from the others around you. Do not leave this at it's default setting. Under that is the Wireless Channel. You need to be using channel 1,6, or 11. To learn why read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Next is the Encryption WEP Key. We strongly advise against using WEP. It is able to be cracked within minutes by a hacker. Updating your firmware should allow for the much more secure choice of WPA2 Personal also called WPA2 PSK.

Click the green Apply button and you are done.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
