Setup WiFi on the Dlink DCS-900W

The Dlink DCS-900W router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Dlink DCS-900W

To get started configuring the Dlink DCS-900W WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Dlink DCS-900W

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

Starting on the Home page of the Dlink DCS-900W internet camera, click the choice at the top of the page labeled Advanced. Then, look to the left and click System.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Dlink DCS-900W

On this new page, scroll down until you come to the Wireless Interface section. In this section find the Network Name and enter a unique name you have come up with. This name identifies your network so that you can find it later on. To learn more about this topic, read our Wireless Names Guide.

Now find the Wireless Channel drop down menu. Be sure you are on the correct channel. You should be on channel 1,6, or 11. To learn why these channels are important, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

At this point, we recommend updating your firmware for this camera. WEP is extremely weak and can be cracked within minutes. Upgrading to allow for the security mode of WPA2-PSK is highly recommended. To learn more about the different security modes read our What is WPS Guide.

If you upgraded, you will need to enter a Pre-shared Key. This is your password to gain access to the internet. To learn how to create a strong and memorable password, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
