  • Wireless Network Name - This is the name you give your wireless network. Go ahead and create a unique name, but avoid personal information for security reasons. To learn more about this subject, read our Wireless Names Guide.
  • Wireless Channel - It is important that you choose either channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels are the most you can get out of the spectrum without overlap. To learn more, read our WiFi Channels Guide.
  • Security Mode - Home networks should choose WPA-Personal.
  • The next option should be WPA Mode - The best option here is WPA-PSK. For an even more secure option, update your firmware to allow for WPA2-PSK. To learn the differences in the security modes, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.
  • You are now asked what Cipher Type you want. We recommend using AES. This is considered the most secure.
  • Passphrase - This is the password you want to use to access your network. This is also used to encrypt your private data, so it needs to be strong. We recommend at least 20 characters. To learn more about creating a strong password, read our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it, you're done, all that is left is to click the Save Settings button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
