On this page I will explain how to reset the Dlink DI-704 router back to it's original factory default settings. It's important to begin with the difference between two commonly confused words, reset and reboot. When I use the word reboot I am referring to a cycle in the power to the device itself. This is a total shutdown in the power to the device. When I use the word reset I am referring to a complete factory restore of all settings. This means every single setting you have ever changed is erased and returned to how it was out of the factory.

Warning: This reset can have complications, especially if you don't understand what settings have been erased and what ones remain the same. Take the following into consideration:

  • The router's setup username and password are erased and replaced with the original factory settings.
  • Have you made any other changes? Every one of them will be reverted back to how they were straight from the factory.

Take the end of a paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. If you don't hold the reset button down for long enough you end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Warning: Don't turn your router off during this reset process as it could permanently damage the device.

Don't forget this reset erases every single setting you have ever changed. To avoid losing all your information we recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you decide to reset.
