The Dlink DIR-655v2 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.
Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.
Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.
An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.
Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.
You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.
To get started configuring the Dlink DIR-655v2 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.
To login to the Dlink DIR-655v2, follow our Dlink DIR-655v2 Login Guide.
If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.
We start this wireless setup guide on the SETUP page of the Dlink DIR-655v2 router. To begin configuring your wireless settings click WIRELESS SETTINGS located on the left hand side of the page.
On this new page, start by making sure the Enable Wireless box is checked.
Next you need to set a Wireless Network Name. This can be whatever you want. However, due to security reasons we strongly recommend that you avoid any sort of personal information. For more info check out our Wireless Names Guide.
Now make sure the box marked Enable Auto Channel Scan is unchecked. Then set the Wireless Channel to either 1, 6, or 11. To learn why these are the best options read our WiFi Channels Guide.
Following that set the Security Mode to WPA-Personal. Then set the WPA Mode to WPA2 only. To find out why this will give you the strongest security see our WEP vs. WPA Guide.
The Cipher Type should be set to AES.
Lastly you'll need to set a Pre-Shared Key. This will serve as your network password and can be anything you want. However keep in mind that a strong password is 14-20 characters in length and doesn't contain any personal information. For more help check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
That's all there is to it. Just be sure to click Save Settings near the top of the page.
After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
