Configure your Computer to Have a Static IP Address

Port forwarding the Dlink DIR-815 to your computer can be more reliable if you first configure a static IP address on your computer. We have instructions to setup a static IP address for Windows 7, Windows 8, and a variety of other devices on our Static IP Address Settings page.

Please note that while setting up a static IP address on your computer is optional, it is still a very good idea to go ahead and do it. In the long run it will make your port forward much more reliable.

Login To The Dlink DIR-815

To get started forwarding a port you need to login to your Dlink DIR-815 router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Forward a Port on the Dlink DIR-815 router

Find The Port Forwarding Section of the Dlink DIR-815

This is the general page from your Dlink DIR-815 router.

You begin on the INTERNET CONNECTION screen of the Dlink DIR-815 router. First, you need to click ADVANCED at the top of the page, then PORT FORWARDING on the left.

Configure the Port Forwarding section of your Dlink DIR-815

Now to forward a port, make the following changes:

You are now on the correct page to create a forwarded port.

Place a checkmark in the small box on the far left. This enables the rule you are creating.

Moving to the right, enter the name of the program you are forwarding these ports for, this is only a suggestion, and only for your future reference.

Under that is the IP Address. You need to enter the LAN IP address of the computer you are forwarding these ports to. If you don't know how to find the internal IP address of a computer, click the following guide, What's my IP Address.

Enter the ports you want forwarded in the Public Port boxes and the Private Port boxes. If you are forwarding only one port, enter that one number in all four boxes. If you are forwarding a range, enter the lowest number in the left box of both and the highest number in the right box of both.

Use the Traffic Type drop down menu to choose the type of protocol you want to use to forward these ports.

The Schedule should be set to Always.

Once you are done, click Save Settings at the top of the page.

Congratulations, you created a port forward!

Test if Your Ports are Open

Now that you have forwarded ports on the Dlink DIR-815 you should test to see if your ports are forwarded correctly.
