On this page I will be showing you how to reset the Dlink DWL-2000APv2 router. A reset is not the same thing as a reboot. When I use the word reboot I am referring to a cycle in the power to the device. When I use the word reset I am referring to a complete wipe of all internal memory. All settings are returned to their original factory defaults.

Warning: A reset like the one you are considering can be dangerous. Do not unplug or turn off the router during this reset. It is also very important that you understand that this erases all settings you have ever changed in the lifetime of your router. We suggest making a list of any settings you know you have changed. Things you may not have considered are:

  • The router's main username and password are erased and returned to factory defaults.
  • The Internet name and password are also erased and returned to factory defaults.
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password. To find out what these are you need to contact your ISP.
  • Have you ever forwarded a port? Have you ever changed an IP address? Any other settings you can think of you will need to reconfigure them after the reset is complete.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:

  • Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
  • Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
  • Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
  • Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
  • Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.

This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.

Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.

NordVPN faster than ever deal!

Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

The first step in this reset is to find out where the reset button is located on the outside of the device. For this particular router it is found on the back panel. Go ahead and take a look at the image below for the exact location.

router reset factory settings

While the router is turned on take a paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 5 seconds before you release it. This begins the reset process (this could take a few minutes to complete). If you simply press and release the reset button you may only reboot the router after the reset is complete.

Remember a reset like the one you are about to preform is going to erase every single setting you have ever changed on your device. If you need or want to avoid this kind of loss you need to try other methods of troubleshooting first.

Login to the Dlink DWL-2000APv2

Now you'll need to log into your Dlink DWL-2000APv2 router by using the factory default username and password. If you're not sure where to find these, don't worry. We've provided them for your use in our Login Guide.

Tip: Defaults not logging you in? Try holding the reset button down for longer.

Change Your Password

After you've reset and logged into your router we suggest setting a new password for it. This can be whatever you like, however keep in mind that this password will only protect your router settings, not your wireless network. Still, setting a strong password is always a good decision. For help in doing so be sure to take a look through our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Tip: Keep from losing your new password by writing it on a sticky note and attaching it to the underside of your router.
