Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Dlink DWR-921

wifi wireless
This is the wifi setup page from your Dlink router.

On this new page make sure there is a checkmark in the box called Enable Wireless.

Directly under that is the Wireless Network Name. This is how you identify your network later on. Make up a name to call your network. Be unique but avoid personal or router specific information. Learn more in our How to Change your Wireless Name guide.

If you want to change the Wireless Channel you would do that next. First, uncheck the box labeled Enable Auto Channel Scan. Then under that in the drop down box labeled Wireless Channel pick the new channel you want to use for your network. Make sure you use channels 1,6 or 11 only. Learn why in our guide titled WiFi Channels.

After that you need to locate the drop down menu labeled Security Mode. This is the type of encryption you plan on using for your network. I recommend using WPA-Personal.

Below that you need to narrow it down even farther. In the drop down box labeled WPA Mode choose WPA2 only. If you are interested in learning why this is the best choice read our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Go ahead and set the Cipher Type to AES.

Finally you need to create a Pre-Shared Key. This is the Internet password and it should be strong. It will not matter how strong your encryption is if you have a simple password. Make this password as complex as you can. The more random a password looks the stronger it is. Use a minimum of 14 to 20 characters. Learn how to create a strong password in our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

That's it. Now click the blue Apply button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
