Setup WiFi on the Draytek Vigor-2710n

The Draytek Vigor-2710n router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Draytek Vigor-2710n

To get started configuring the Draytek Vigor-2710n WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Draytek Vigor-2710n

You should begin on the Home page of the DrayTek Vigor-2710n router. To setup the WiFi, click the option in the left, blue, sidebar labeled Wireless LAN. Then, below that choose the option of General Setup.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Draytek Vigor-2710n

You are then taken to a page like the one you see here.

First, make sure that the box labeled Enable Wireless LAN is checked.

Second is the Mode. Each of these choices refers to an era of wireless devices. 11b refers to 1999 to approximately 2003. 11g is referring to 2003 to about 2009. 11n is referring to 2009 to around 2012. Newer than that you will require a firmware upgrade of your router to allow for 11ac. We recommend choosing the option of Mixed (11b+11g+11n).

Next is the SSID. In the first SSID box, enter a name you can remember for your wireless identification name. It not really important what you enter here but we recommend that you avoid using personal information. To learn more, read our Wireless Names Guide.

Now find the box titled Channel. Make sure you use channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels don't overlap one another. To learn more, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Click the OK button when you are finished here.

Then, tick the option in the blue sidebar labeled Security.

First is the Mode. Read our WEP vs. WPA Guide for the differences in these modes. Our recommendation is WPA2/PSK.

The last thing you need to change is the Pre-Shared Key (PSK). This is the password you will use to gain access to your network. We recommend using at least 14-20 characters. Learn more by clicking this link.

That's it, just click the OK button before exiting.

You may need to restart your router for these changes to take effect.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
