Are you having trouble with the Edimax BR-6216Mg router? Can't login to the router's user interface? You may need to reset the router back to factory defaults. Before we begin I need to explain the difference between a reset and a reboot.

A reboot is a cycle of the power to the unit.

A reset is a complete factory restore of all settings. This means every setting you have ever changed is erased and returned to how it was when it left the factory.

Warning: Everything you have ever changed is erased. We strongly recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting methods before continuing. Things to consider before continuing are:

  • The router's main username and password are erased and reverted back to factory defaults.
  • The Internet name and password are also erased and returned to factory defaults.
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password to stay connected to the Internet. Call your ISP for these details.
  • All settings such as port forwards, IP addresses and even parental controls are erased.

Reset the Edimax BR-6216Mg

To find the physical reset button on the outside of the unit you need to turn the Edimax BR-6216Mg around and look at the back panel. I don't have an image of the Edimax BR-6216Mg back panel but I do have a different Edimax router to show you. The reset button should be in a similar place.

Take a straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This starts the reset process. If you don't hold the reset button down for long enough you end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it.

Remember this reset is erasing every single setting you have ever changed in the history of this router. We recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you continue with the Edimax BR-6216Mg reset.

Login to the Edimax BR-6216Mg

Now that you've successfully reset the Edimax BR-6216Mg router you'll want to log into it. This is done by using the factory default username and password we have provided for you in our Login Guide.

Tip: Defaults not working for you? It might be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.

Change Your Password

After you've logged into your router we recommend setting a new password for it. Keep in mind that this password will only protect your router settings, not your wireless network. However, setting a strong password is always a wise choice. For help in doing so be sure to visit our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Tip: Prevent yourself from losing your new password by writing it on a sticky note and attaching it to the underside of your router.

Setup WiFi on the Edimax BR-6216Mg

Finally you need to start setting up the router again back to how you like it. We recommend beginning with the wireless settings as these protect your local network. For an easy to follow guide check out our How to Setup WiFi on the Edimax BR-6216Mg page.
