Are you having trouble with your router and can't login to fix the problem? You may need to reset the Edimax BR-6504n router back to it's original defaults.
Do you know the difference between a reset and a reboot?
- Reboot - This is a simple cycle in the power to the unit. This is done if you are having behavioral problems with the router. No settings are changed when you reboot or restart the router.
- Reset - Every setting you have ever changed is erased in a reset. A reset is a complete factory restore of all settings.
Warning: Resetting this router is a big step and should not be taken lightly. Please make a list of all setting you have changed in the past, such as:
- The router's main username and password.
- The Internet name and password.
- The ISP username and password if you have a DSL router. Call your ISP for the details.
- Don't forget about the port forwards, IP address changes, DNS server settings, parental controls...etc.

Use a VPN Instead
Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
Do you know where the reset button is located? For the Edimax BR-6504n router you can find it on the back panel. I have circled it's location for you in the image below.
Press and hold this reset button for at least 20 seconds. If you don't hold this button down for the entire 20 seconds you end up initiating the WPS function. What is WPS?
Remember a reset like the one you are doing is erasing every single setting you have ever changed on this device. We recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you continue with this reset.
Login to the Edimax BR-6504N
Once you've reset and logged into the Edimax BR-6504n router you'll want to log into it. This is done by using the factory default username and password. Not sure where to find these? We have them listed for you in our Login Guide.
Tip: If the defaults aren't logging you in it might be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.
Change Your Password
Now that you've logged into the router we suggest setting a new password for it. This can be anything you want it to be, however keep in mind that a strong password contains no personal information and is 14-20 characters in length. For more help be sure to visit our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
Tip: Keep yourself from losing your new password by writing it on a sticky note and attaching it to the bottom of your router.
