Setup WiFi on the EnGenius ESR9850

The EnGenius ESR9850 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

Login To The EnGenius ESR9850

To get started configuring the EnGenius ESR9850 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the EnGenius ESR9850

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

This guide starts on the Status page of the EnGenius ESR9850 router. To configure the WiFi section of this router, click the choice in the left side bar labeled Wireless. Now look to the top of the page and click the link of Basic.

Change the WiFi Settings on the EnGenius ESR9850

You are then directed to a new page. Here, find the box labeled SSID1. This is the name you create in order to identify your network. Go ahead and enter a new name for your network. It's not important what you enter here but avoid personal information. Learn more by reading our guide titled Wireless Names.

Now scroll down to the bottom of the page and check the Channel you are using. Be sure you use channels 1,6, or 11. Just use the drop down box to change your channel if you need to. Read more about these three channels by clicking this link.

Tick the Apply button.

Going back to the top of the page, click the choice of Security.

On this new page, use the drop down menu next to SSID Selection to pick the SSID you just created on the last page.

The Encryption is next. For the most secure WiFi, select WPA pre-shared key.

Next, is the WPA type. We recommend choosing WPA2(AES). If you want to know why this is the best option for your home network security, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

Set the Pre-shared Key type to Passphrase.

Below that is the Pre-shared Key. This is the password you plan on using to access your network. This password is also used in the encryption process and should be strong. We recommend at least 14-20 characters in length. Don't use words or personal information. Do use symbols and numbers along with the letters. Learn more by clicking this link.

When you are finished, click the Apply button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
