Once directed to the page above, use the ESSID box to create a new name for your network. This acts as an identifier for your network, nothing more. It doesn't matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Read our Wireless Names Guide for more information.

Next is the Channel Number. If needed this channel can be changed just like a radio or television. Use only channel 1,6, or 11 because they don't overlap one another. To learn more about this, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Click the Apply button in the lower right corner of the page.

Then tick the option in the left sidebar labeled Security Settings.

This takes you to the page you see above. First, use the Encryption drop down list to choose the type of security you want to use. Read our WEP vs. WPA Guide for more info on the differences in these options. Our recommendation is the use of WPA pre-shared key.

Next is the WPA Unicast Cipher Suite. This is just asking what type of WPA you want to use. Our recommendation is WPA2 (AES).

Set the Pre-shared Key Format to Passphrase.

Lastly, enter a strong Pre-shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. We recommend a minimum of 14-20 characters and at least one symbol, number, and capital letter. Read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for more information.

When you are finished, tick the Apply button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
