If you have been trying to login to the Huawei E8231 router and been unable to do so it might be time to consider a reset. A reset is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you cycle the power to the unit. When you reset a router it takes all the previously changed settings and returns them to how they were from the factory.

Warning: This reset is a big step and should not be taken lightly. We strongly recommend trying other troubleshooting methods before you continue. Some of the settings that will be changed are:

  • The router's main username and password
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password. This information can be gathered by calling your ISP.
  • The wireless information such as SSID and Internet password.
  • If you have changed any other settings such as port forwards or IP addresses write them down as they are erased as well.

Reset the Huawei E8231

The reset button is located under the back panel of the unit. Unfortunately I don't have an image to show you. Go ahead and remove the back cover and there should be a button/pinhole labeled reset.

While the Huawei E8231 router is on, take a straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. If you don't hold it down the entire amount of time you might end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Remember a reset is erasing every setting you have ever changed in the history of this router.

Login to the Huawei E8231

After this reset is finished you need to login using the defaults. We have these for you. They are found in our Login Guide for the Huawei E8231 router.

Change Your Password

Once you have logged into the Huawei E8231 router you need to change the default router password. This password is what restricts access to the web interface section of the router. To help you create a password we have a Choosing a Strong Password guide for you to read.

Tip: Don't lose this password. One way to avoid that is to write it down on a piece of paper and stick it to the bottom of the unit.

Setup WiFi on the Huawei E8231

The last thing we will remind you to setup is the WiFi settings. Our Huawei E8231 WiFi Instructions are easy to follow and help you secure your local network.
